THE HOLDERNESS HUNT

AUTUMN HUNTING AND HUNTING ETIQUETTE
  • Visitors strictly by appointment made with the Hunt Secretary
  • Punctuality is required.  Always arrive in good time
  • Caps must be paid to the Hunt Secretary
  • At the meet, greet your friends, but above all make a point of greeting the Masters, Huntsmen, Whips and Host with the phrase "Good Morning" and always address a Master as "Master"
  • Bad manners and verbal profanities will not be tolerated
  • When moving off, always point your horse's head towards the Hounds (to prevent your horse from kicking them), this is also important during the day's activities, especially in narrow lanes, tracks or dyke and river banks
DON'TS
  • Never ride ahead of Masters, Field Masters, Huntsmen, Whips or Hounds
  • Never un-box or park in villages.  Do not cause obstructions or damage verges
  • Never jump fences or gates when Hounds are not running, not only is this impolite it is often how accidents are caused
  • Never jump onto or override Hounds, they must always be given priority
  • Never interfere with Hounds unless asked to do so, unless shielding them from a potential road accident
  • Never ride across new grass or crops
  • Never gallop near or through livestock
  • Never gallop through farmyards
  • Never ride over mown grass verges
DO'S
  • Always know the whereabouts of the Masters, Field Masters, Huntsman, Whips and Hounds as it makes the day more interesting
  • Always treat private land and landowners with respect
  • Always obey the Field Master's requests
  • Always portray a cheerful and polite manner to all
  • Always close gates
  • Always ride crop headlands keeping tight in
  • Always address every person in a farmyard or at a gate, as they are more than likely to be the farmer or his family
  • When a fox is near, keep very still, very quiet and never holloa until he is well on his way, then point your horse's head in his direction, stand in your stirrups, outstretch your hand with your hunting cap in hand in the direction he has gone.  Only holloa two or three times if needed
DEPARTING THE HUNTING FIELD
  • When departing the hunting field, the correct address is "Good Night", regardless of the time of day
