History in the Making Welcome to the history section, I will be posting stories, historical details and various interesting facts on this page.
1 Hi, I have been doing quite some research and uncovered a fair amount. most of this needs verifying as it changes quite a lot of what we thought we knew. firstly I have established that hounds were moved to Low Hall in 1842 and have been there ever since. The hall as is now is the remaining servants wing of the original Manor of Etton, The Manor had formal gardens stabling and a coach house, the tower was built later. The Manor was granted by William the Conqueror to his step brother. Hounds have been kennelled at various places over the years, they include: Etton, Rise, Skirlaugh, Owstwick, Bishop Burton and Scorborough. The hounds were worked hard in years gone past often being out of kennels for 15 hours, they would often hack 20 miles to a meet and then travel further back. In one year they hunted 100 days with 51 couple, the pack was a four day week pack hunted mainly by farmers. I cant find any evidence of the Light Dragoon being housed at the hall and that the pub was called "light horseman" in the 1700's. the name was changed to "light dragoon" in the late 1800's, there was also another pub in the village called "Globe". so it appears that the pub has no connection though i am starting to be aware that it was maybe the East Yorkshire Yeomanry that spent time there (my fathers regiment). research will continue, enjoy andy
please contact me with any further info or corrections/amendments to make the site a weekly gem for those interested. It is my intention to write a couple of paragraphs per week to encourage followers to visit the site regularily. I also aim to write a couple of very short tales involving hunting from around the country through the ages. Happy reading Andy Taylor |
